Our vision is that the story of the death and rebirth of the Hudson
River and its communities has been chronicled by artists in
powerful ways over the past century and a half. Beginning with the
visionary paintings of the Hudson River School, various 20th
century abstract artists, and now a new generation of artists
living and working in revitalized communities located in its
watershed, the river has functioned very much as a mirror
reflecting the health of the communities living on or near the
Hudson. As artists once celebrated the restorative power of the
natural world, and subsequently depicted the transformation of the
river into a open sewer, a new generation of artists is now
rediscovering, just as the communities located on the waterfront
are reconnecting, with the river as a source of inspiration and
enjoyment. As artists, religious leaders, educators,
environmentalists, and community leaders become aware of how
interdependent we are and how our health is reflected in the health
of the river, we believe that the political will to continue its
restoration can be sustained. The arts have a pivotal role in this
process; hence, we are seeking applications from artists whose work
reflects our theme for a $1500 prize and a featured position in our
May 2006 program.
Artists working in all medium are encouraged to apply.
